Are unicorns real or fiction? When we think of unicorns we generally picture a white horse with a horn sticking out of its head and they are generally imagined as beautiful animals.
The Bible mentions the word unicorn six times which prompts many people to ask the question: are unicorns real? An online dictionary defines the word unicorn as meaning an animal with one horn or just one horn but it can also mean a two-horned animal of an unknown kind. An older dictionary defines the unicorn as being a rhinoceros.
Bible Verses That Mention Unicorns - Real or Fiction?
Nu 23:22 - God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn. It is only the King James version that calls this animal unicorn. All other versions refer to this animal as a wild ox.
Nu 24:8 - God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.
Job 39:9 - Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?
Job 39:10 - Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?
Ps 29:6 - He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.
Ps 92:10 - But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.
What are some of the characteristics of this animal as outlined in the scriptures above? Apparently the animal mentioned in scripture has great strength according to Numbers. Horses are strong but I suspect that this is referring to a different kind of animal. Job pictures the animal as being untameable not willing to be a servant of man. Psalms pictures this creature as agile and exalted.
The Hebrew name for a horned wild animal is Reem which scholars believe was translated into the word unicorn in the King James Version. In the Revised Version of the bible the unicorn is called the wild ox. Many believe this animal whose name was translated unicorn was actually called the Urus.
The Urus is defined as a very large, powerful and savage extinct bovine animal anciently abundant in Europe. It appears to have still existed in the time of Julius Caesar. It had very large horns and was hardly capable of domestication. This definition fits the biblical descriptions of the unicorn as described in the Bible verses mentioned above.
The unicorn of mythology probably never existed but myths are influenced by real events. The now extinct animal called the Urus was probably the foundation of the unicorn myth and helps us to decide for ourselves the answer to the question are unicorns real or fiction.
Why did the King James translation refer to these animals as unicorns? The original Hebrew word in the passages I mentioned above was Re'em. The Septuagint is a Greek translation of the Old Testament. In the Greek translation, the word for Re'em was called Monokeros. The Latin Vulgate translated that same word called the Re'em "Unicornis" thus the mention of this animal in the King James version as an unicorn.
The word "Unicornis" simply means a beast with a horn. It is highly unlikely the writers of the King James version of the Bible were thinking of the unicorn of mythology when they were translating the word of God into English. However, saying unicorns are in the Bible is a great conversation starter.
According to Fossil Records, The Answer To The Question Are Unicorns Real or Fiction Is Answered
The unicorns of fairy tales and children's toys are depicted as cute white horses with one horn protruding from their heads. Sometimes the unicorn is depicted to have wings. We know that the answer to the question, "Are Unicorns Real?" in this sense is no. These are just works of fiction.
There is a legend in song about unicorns playing in the water at the time of Noah's Ark when the animals were making their way inside the ark so they missed getting on the boat with the other animals and perished in the flood.
There were fossils found in 2016 that revealed the bones and skull of an animal that had one horn. This animal was huge and scientists believe it existed around 29,000 years ago and is now extinct.
In the year 2008, a deer with one horn was found on an Italian preserve. Scientists believed this was due to a genetic flaw in the animal.
During the course of history, it is very possible that many animals could have had genetic flaws causing one horn to grow out its head thus birthing the mythological unicorn.
