-------The Indwelling------

Recently I had a debate with a Wiccan who claimed to be former Christian and made the statement, "There's nothing that says Christians have the holy spirit within them or that they are always Christians".

As far as I am concerned, there is no such thing as a former Christian. In the Wiccan's case, she had attended church, listened to the sermons and teachings, called herself a Christian, and then rejected those teachings and became a Wiccan.

She had never experienced the rebirth or what Jesus calls being "born again."

It is my understanding (and my experience) that when a person sincerely asks Jesus to come into their hearts and wash away his or her sins with His shed blood, then Jesus honors that request and seals the deal by imparting the comforter or the Holy Spirit into that person.

The Holy Spirit is oftentimes called the Spirit of God in scripture. There is no difference between the two. In Eph 4:30 we read, "And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption."

This passage clearly tells us two things. The first is that true Christians are sealed until the day of redemption. Once a person has experienced the rebirth, that person is a child of God from that point on into eternity. They cannot lose their salvation. The second point is that true Christians can "grieve" the Holy Spirit. Some Christians get caught up in the affairs of the world allowing their sin nature to rule even though they have the Holy Spirit dwelling within them. Some of these Christians die a premature death because of it. God will not allow one of His children to continue in sin. They also lose rewards in heaven because of their disobedience. Yet, they are in heaven not hell.

There are people who claim to be Christians but they have never experienced the rebirth. They try to follow a set of rules and regulations and hope they have been good enough to get into heaven but it is impossible to get into heaven by your works...we get there by what Christ did for us. They fail to realize that salvation is a supernatural event. Salvation transforms spiritually dead people into spiritually alive people. Once this has occurred, there is no going back to being spiritually dead. You can, however, become spiritually weak by not spending time in the Word of God or not praying and neglecting to fellowship with other believers.

In John Chapter 3 verse 5 we read, "Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."

Jesus is saying here that in order for man to enter the kingdom of God, he must first be born in the flesh (born of water) and then he must be born of the spirit. A man is born in sin and spiritually dead. He experiences a rebirth when he is born of the spirit and there is only one way to do that and that is by allowing Jesus to wash your sins away with His shed blood so He can become your Lord and Savior. The covenant is sealed with the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:16 says, "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God." It is God's Holy Spirit that bears witness to God with our spirit that we belong to Him. When God looks at Christian, He doesn't see a sinner....He sees the indwelling of the Holy Spirit which tells Him that the righeousness of Christ has been imputed on that person.

Romans 814 says, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." This proves that you have to have the indwelling of the spirit to be considered a child of God.

I have had more than one Wiccan claim that they used to be Christians and they have now found a better way. This is a lot of baloney. They were never true Christians and have now embraced one of Satan's deceptions as truth which will only result in them spending an eternity in hell unless they turn away from Wicca and back to God.

Their biggest problem in their so called Christian walk was that they tried to understand the word of God in their natural state which simply cannot be done.

"But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God." 1 Cor. 2:10-12

It is the Spirit of God indwelling within us that allows us to understand the scriptures. Without that Spirit, the scriptures would be foolishness to us. "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." 1 Cor. 2:14

It is impossible to truly call Jesus Lord without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. There are too many people who claim that Jesus is Lord but they have no right to make that claim because the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is not with them. They are false Christians. "Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost." 1 Cor. 12:3

Salvation is a supernatural event that results in the believer being indwelled by the Holy Spirit of God which seals them as a child of God for eternity. When someone tells you that they used to be a Christian but have now found a better way, don't you believe it. It is a lie because they are following the father of lies.
